Many applications of industrial gases require a gas distribution system to be installed at the user's premises. Safety considerations will often require that the main store of the gas, whether this be a cryogenic storage tank or gas cylinders, be located outside in a freely ventilated position. A system of piping is then provided to transfer the gas to the point of use.

Such piping systems must be designed and installed in a manner which complies with relevant legislation, i.e. the Pressure Equipment Regulations of 1999 (S.I. 2001). Once installed they must be documented and maintained in accordance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (S.I. 128).

BCGA Codes of Practice CP4, for most industrial gases, CP6, for acetylene, and CP18, for special gases, provide detailed guidance on how to carry out this work.
